Why I Love This Edible Compost
Edible compost is a playful garden-themed party snack made from various candies that, when put together, look like the real thing. This post covers how I created this, packaged it for guests, and made the presentation look convincingly garden-inspired.
You and your guests will enjoy this easy-to-make dessert that was inspired by my compost bin.
When I think of gardening, I think of compost, and when I was planning my garden party, I wanted to have edible compost. I thought that would be a fun dessert/snack. The main reason I love this compost is that it’s easy to make. You can get as creative as you would like as far as what ingredients to include.
This week I’ll cover how to create this wonderful edible compost for your garden party!
What Inspired Edible Compost
As I planned my garden party, I knew I wanted an easy chocolate dessert and a gift bag for my guests. In addition to dirt cups, I knew compost would be a hit. I’m a big fan of having things that are 100% edible. Thinking through how compost looks, I started to come up with ideas for how to mimic compost with food.
By using chocolate-covered fruits, nuts, pretzels, and edible flowers, I was able to mimic compost in a fun way. By using burlap bags, the compost was complete! Placing the compost bags next to the tray of compost was a cute addition. Using scoops that looked like garden tools was a cute addition as well.
Creating The Compost Look
Creating edible compost is super simple once you have all the ingredients. Just place all the ingredients in a zip-lock bag, leaving some air in it, and shake it up!
If you want to get a little more creative, you can gently snap the pretzels to look more “worm” -like. You could also smash the Jordan almonds to mimic eggs better. A third option is to break apart the edible flowers. The goal is to make this look as similar to compost as possible. Keep that in mind as you create your compost!
How To Package It As A Party Favor
Complete your compost by placing four ounces of compost in a snack bag. Place the snack bag inside a burlap bag.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can buy some tags and glue the ingredient list & a compost image to the front. This allows guests to know exactly what’s in the mix, as well as look cute.
To display your compost during the party, you may opt to place the extra non-bagged compost on a tray. Next to the compost, place a fence and then lay the compost bags inside the fence. This completes the compost vibe.

How far in advance can this treat be made?
If you leave out the pretzels & edible flowers, you can easily make this a week in advance and then, the day of, add in the pretzels & edible flowers
What ingredients are most convincing?
Personally, I felt the edible flowers & jordan almonds were very convincing; bite-size black licorice would be a great fit for "sticks", and you could add in gummy worms for a take on vermi-composting (and you can use the extra gummy worms for dirt cups!)
