Easy Sustainable Switches To Make

I've written about my sustainable journey before, but this time I wanted to share some foods that I consider sustainable. Whether it's because I can skip the single-use container or use fewer ingredients than store-bought, these foods are easy to make at home!

The easiest sustainable food swaps I've made are listed below:

Where To Find Easy Foods That Are Sustainable Recipes

For me, I've found recipes by searching the internet - something like "uses for corn cobs" brings up a few results. This is my go to method for finding new recipes. In addition, following my favorite social media bloggers gives me many ideas!

Most recipes utilize scraps that would typically be thrown away - like my carrot top pesto, or making a recipe yourself - like mayonaise. When I compare the 3-4 ingredient mayo I make to the store bought version, I am shocked! I have a 1 minute mayo recipe that I am working on getting onto my blog - literally takes 5 minutes or less to gatehr ingredients and 1 minute to blend it together. I can't get to the store in that amount of time.

Croutons are another easy thing to make (and bread crumbs as well!). There are many recipes out there for both, most involve using stale bread. I've also made "dessert croutons" by tossing my few-day-old doughnuts (frosting and all) into a pan and cooking for a few minutes. I let them cool and the frosting had crystalized and they were decadent!

Attainable Sustainable Books

The Attainable Sustainable books are probably the books I reference the most in my house. If you are like me, and prefer to have a hard copy book - I would recommend either of the Attaianable Sustaiable books. Check your local library to peruse the book before purchasing.

There is also a website for Attainable Sustainble - scroll down a little to find the search function. Search for an ingredient (like corn) or a recipe (like mayo), and you will find what exists on the site. The site is easy to use, and has many resources - so if you want to skip the book for now, give the site a try.
